The Manage Backups Form
From:
Main Menu - Maintenance

Use this form to manage your database backups. You can verify that a backup is valid (see The Validate Database Form), restore a backup, or delete one or more backups.

You create backups using the Backup Database feature.

In order to use this feature, all forms except the main menu must be closed, and there must be no other users accessing the database.

NOTE: Move the cursor over the picture of the form. When you see the little hand thingy Hand Thingy appear, you can click on the item to get more information!

Status Random Seek Validation Backup Database Name Date Made Validated Clear Reference Count Validate Restore Delete Close Navigation Buttons Record Selectors Form Control

Status: Shows status when the validate button is pressed.

Random Seek Validation: This number, inverted, is the chance that any given record is validated in the seek test. Making this number larger causes the validation to run more rapidly, at the expense of not checking that the indexes are correct. A value in the neighborhood of 5 to 10 (depending on the performance of your system) is a good compromise between speed and safety. See Validate below

Backup Database Name: The name of the backup database. The date the backup was made appears at the end of the backup.

Date Made: The date the backup was made. This date is created from the number at the end of the backup database name.

Validated: This box is checked if a validation has been run on the database.

Clear Reference Count: Whenever a user opens the customer form, a reference count is incremented (1 is added to it). When a user closes the customer form, the reference count is decremented (1 is subtracted from it). Validation can only occur when the reference count is 0; that is when nobody has opened the customer form. Use this button when you wish to run the validation no matter what the reference count is.

Validate: Validates the backup database. First click on the record selector of the database to restore, then click the Validate button. If it passes, the validation box is checked. See Random Seek Validation above to see how to speed up the validation.

Restore: Deletes the current database, and restores the backup. First click on the record selector of the database to restore, then click the Restore button. Use this feature if your current working database has errors that you cannot fix.

Delete: Deletes the backup database. First click on the record selector of the database to restore, then click the Delete button. You can also delete backup databases using the windows explorer; although you will have to open and close this form for any changes you make there to be reflected in the form. Press Windows E to invoke the windows explorer, and go to the Sat Tracker installation directory, typically c:\Sat Tracker. See Useful Windows Stuff.

Close: Closes this form.

Hand Thingy: See? It really works!!
